French Connection Topples Owls

Leicester City 2 - 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Goals from Riyad Mahrez and Anthony Knockaert secured all three points for the Foxes this evening and moved the club to the brink of a return to Premier League football. If results go Leicester's way, promotion could be guaranteed tomorrow afternoon. Tonight's victory, Leicester's 27th league win of the season, equals the club record for victories in any season in the club's history. With 89 points on the board and 6 games still to play, it seems likely that City will post 100+ points by the end of the season. Tonight was Leicester's 21st game unbeaten - a run which stretches back to early December.

City were not at their best this evening but, as on so many occasions this season, found a way to win. They took the lead in the 10th minute when Wood slipped the ball through to Mahrez on the right. The winger cut back onto his left foot and curled a super shot into the bottom corner of the net. To their credit, Sheffield Wednesday responded well and came back into the match. Just before the break, Antonio fired a fierce shot from the edge of the box which Schmeichel could only parry into the bottom corner. Leicester restored their lead in the 61st minute when Knockaert curled a sublime free kick into the top left hand corner from outside the penalty area. Leicester weren't at their best but even in second gear, they are too good for most teams in the Championship this season.
